Birmingham fire claims life of 73-year-old man

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say one person was killed in a house fire in the South Titusville area of Birmingham.

Birmingham Fire Chief C.W. Mardis said the blaze happened around 8 p.m. Thursday at a home near Center Way South and 22nd Court South.

WBRC-TV reports (http://bit.ly/11d9Tw4) that a 73-year-old male was found unresponsive near his front door. Fire officials say it appears he was trying to escape when he collapsed.

Emergency personnel took the man outside and he was declared dead by paramedics.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
