MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a police department employee is in custody after they say he held officers at bay during a standoff in Midland City over the weekend.

The Dothan Eagle reports (http://bit.ly/11T4Z33) that the ordeal began with a report of shots being fired Saturday morning.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said his department assisted Midland City police following a mutual aid request.

Sheriff's officials say the suspect later barricaded himself in a Dale County home. After a two-hour standoff, negotiations were able to convince the man to surrender peacefully.

Authorities say 43-year-old Keith Rinehardt was apprehended and jailed.

Authorities say Rinehardt is employed with the Headland Police Department. Details of his role with the department weren't immediately available, and it wasn't known whether he has a lawyer.
