TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The mayor who led Tuscaloosa during the tornado disaster of 2011 is beginning his re-election campaign over the internet.

Walt Maddox released a video Thursday and posted messages through social media rather than holding a traditional campaign kickoff.

The election is set for August, and Maddox says he will continue to engage the city over the next two months about Tuscaloosa's future.

The 40-year-old Maddox received generally positive reviews for his handling of the tornado aftermath more than two years ago. A massive twister killed more than 50 people in the city, and Tuscaloosa is still rebuilding after thousands of homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.

Maddox was first elected mayor in 2005.
