Jackson named Alabama district attorney of year

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Michael Jackson has been named Alabama's District attorney of the year.

Jackson is the district attorney for Bibb, Perry, Dallas, Wilcox and Hale counties. He Has been elected district attorney twice in Alabama's Fourth Judicial Circuit. He was named the state's top prosecutor at the annual District Attorney's Conference this week. He is currently the only black prosecutor serving as a district attorney in Alabama.

Earlier this year he was given the John F. Kennedy Personal Courage Award for his prosecution of former state trooper Bernard Fowler, who was convicted in the 1965 shooting death of Jimmie Lee Jackson in Perry County.

Earlier this year Jackson's office tried and convicted James Thomas, a former state legislator and principal in Wilcox County, on charges of sexual misconduct involving a student.
