Alabama Rep. Bonner moves up resignation

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner has moved up his resignation from Congress by two weeks.

Bonner said Tuesday he will resign Aug. 2 instead of Aug. 15.

Gov. Robert Bentley can't call a special election to fill the seat until Bonner leaves. Bonner said moving up the date will allow the governor to schedule the special election so that a replacement can be elected and seated before the new session of Congress begins in January.

Bonner is stepping down to work for the University of Alabama System.
