Officer on leave after shooting in Lanett

LANETT, Ala. (AP) — Police in Lanett say one of the town's officers has been placed on administrative leave with pay after he was involved in a shooting while on duty.

The Opelika-Auburn News reports (http://bit.ly/12SBUeY) that the shooting occurred around 3:35 a.m. Sunday, when officers were attempting to stop a vehicle. Police say a passenger fled the scene as the driver came to a stop. The driver was directed to show his hands, but police say he sped toward the officer, who fired at the vehicle.

The driver was flown to Columbus Medical Center in Georgia with non-life threatening injuries. The driver was treated and subsequently released.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigations is investigating the circumstances. Lanett police said no further details would be released due to the ongoing investigation.
