Inmate stabbed to death Sunday at St. Clair prison

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Department of Corrections officials are investigating the stabbing death of an inmate at St. Clair Correctional Facility in St. Clair County.

Prisons spokesman Brian Corbett says 43-year-old Jammy Bell died Sunday night at a Pell City hospital after begin stabbed during a fight with another inmate.

Corbett says 34-year-old inmate Larry Evans Lowe is considered a suspect in the stabbing.

Corbett says Bell was serving a 35-year sentence out of Washington County for receiving stolen property, burglary and assault. Lowe is serving a 25-year sentence for murder out of the Bessemer district of Jefferson County.

Prison officials say they have recovered two homemade knives that are believed to have been used in the incident.

St. Clair is a maximum security prison that houses about 1,340 inmates.
