Reports: Dog-fighting probe under way in south Ala

ELBA, Ala. (AP) — Federal and state authorities are investigating dog fighting in south Alabama.

WDHN-TV (http://bit.ly/1azyIrn ) reports that federal agents busted an alleged dog-fighting ring in Coffee County on Friday. Officers were searching a home west of Elba near the Covington County line.

Meanwhile, WSFA-TV (http://bit.ly/18Ph8vt ) reports that animals were seized in a dog-fighting investigation in Lee County. The dogs are being transferred to shelters and will receive veterinary treatment.

Police in Auburn and Opelika, plus the Lee County Sheriff's Department and federal authorities are involved, along with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States.

It's unclear whether the operations in Coffee County and Lee County are connected. There's no word of arrests.

An FBI spokesman hasn't returned messages seeking comment.
