BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Gov. Robert Bentley now says he will fill the vacancy created by retiring Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Alfred Bahakel.
AL.com reports (http://bit.ly/14pQDgx ) that Bentley met with Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore Friday morning to discuss the appointment. Bentley spokeswoman Jennifer Ardis told al.com that candidates will be interviewed in the coming weeks and the governor will make an appointment by the Oct. 9 deadline.
Bentley had initially said he was honoring a request from Moore's office that he not appoint someone until after lawmakers could consider moving the position to Mobile.
Ardis says that after Friday's meeting, the governor understands that Moore plans to address the reallocation of judges in the next legislative session.
