ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) — The city of Anniston is making an offer to buy one of the best-known landmarks in the east Alabama town.

Council members have voted unanimously to purchase The Victoria Inn from a holding company operated by the Jacksonville State University Foundation.

The foundation is trying to sell the historic inn after receiving it as a donation, and the city is offering as much as $710,000.

The Anniston Star (http://bit.ly/13X8jfC ) reports the property is appraised at more than $2.8 million.

Mayor Vaughn Stewart says the city wants to preserve its history and promote the economy.

The Queen Anne-style home dates back to 1888. It overlooks Quintard Avenue, the main street through town.
