Ala. crane driver faces murder charges in crash
MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — A grand jury has charged a crane driver with murder over a crash that killed two people.
A Mobile County grand jury on Friday indicted John D. Lopez on a count of murder. He had previously faced a charge of vehicular homicide.
Investigators said Lopez was driving a crane back from a job site in northern Alabama on Oct. 26 when he stopped in a right lane. Al.com (http://bit.ly/17u0XCP ) reports that a pickup truck slammed into the back of the crane, killing James Wilson Barber and Lorine Lilly Frazier.
A police officer earlier testified that Lopez told a nurse that he had taken pills and methamphetamine.
Defense attorney Dennis Knizley accused prosecutors of overreaching. He said the accident was the result of mechanical failures and Barber's driving.
