Funeral arrangements set for Rep. Demetrius Newton

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Funeral arrangements have been announced for Democratic state Rep. Demetrius Newton of Birmingham, who died Wednesday.

Newton was a prominent civil rights lawyer and the first black speaker pro tem of the Alabama House.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Arrington Funeral Home in Fairfield. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fairfield with a burial in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.

Newton represented icons like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. before being elected to the Legislature.
