BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) — Brett Dungan has been elected mayor of the south Alabama town of Bayou La Batre.

Al.com reports (http://bit.ly/1bFToP4) that Dungan won the runoff election against opponent Henry Barnes on Tuesday night, with 56 percent of the vote. The former president of shipbuilder Master Marine Inc. will finish out the three-plus years remaining on ousted former mayor Stan Wright's term.

In June, Wright was sentenced to 15 months in prison after a jury convicted him of using federal funds meant to aid the recovery after Hurricane Katrina to buy land from a family member at an inflated price. Wright had been convicted March 1 on charges of conspiracy, theft of government funds and witness intimidation.

Bayou La Batre's mayor has one of the council's 10 seats.
