TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) — The winner of Alabama's 2012 Republican presidential primary, Rick Santorum, is returning to the state.

The former Pennsylvania senator is scheduled to speak at a political rally at the Tuscumbia Depot a 6 p.m. Thursday.

Alabama's Republican Party chairman, Bill Armistead, said it's rare for Republicans to hold a major event in northwest Alabama because that has traditionally been a strong Democratic area. But he said the GOP made inroads in the 2012 election, when a Republican won a seat on the Colbert County Commission for the first time since Reconstruction. He said Santorum's visit shows the party is working to make more inroads in next year's election.
