The Alabama National Guard is closing its final two armories by the end of September. In November 2011, the National Guard announced it would be closing all the state's 13 armories. Alabama's Military Department said last week it has already closed 11 buildings.
The state tried to save the remaining two armories, but budget cuts and changing needs is forcing the department to both down shut down before September 30th. Some armories were buildings built in the 1950s and many are aging and substandard. Alabama lawmakers say they are working to stop the closings.
