House Health Committee Debating Midwife Bill

Mothers and midwives are once again asking Alabama officials to legalize at-home births attended by midwives.

The House Health Committee held a public hearing Wednesday on a bill that would decriminalize midwifery. Advocates have tried for eight years to get the Alabama Legislature to approve the change.
Britney Williams says she drove Tennessee, where midwifery is legal, to give birth to her two children and plans to do the same for her third. Williams says women who want a home birth in Alabama either have to labor alone at home or find a midwife willing to risk prosecution.
Grace Thomas, assistant state health officer, spoke out against the bill. Thomas says she's concerned legalized midwifery will contribute to the state's already poor infant mortality rate.
