Senate Passes Immigration Bill, Protesters Arrested Outside Senate Chambers

Immigration law protesters being arrested outside of both the state House and Sentate chambers. This story is developing and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Immigration law protesters from the group Alabama’s Conscience were arrested after blocking the entrance to the Senate Chambers in Alabama’s State House. This comes after the Senate passed the rewrite bill proposed by Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale, clarifying the current immigration law, HB56.

The newly passed bill will be sent to House to be debated on in committee. Last month, the House passed changes to a separate bill, to clarify HB56 so it won't prevent religious groups from providing charity to illegal immigrants. The House bill would also stop schools from asking for the immigration status of students before they enroll. 

Wednesday is the final day the Alabama legislature is meeting for its regular 2012 legislative session.
