A developer is planning a major riverfront project that will include upscale apartments, hotels and restaurants in Phenix City.

Mike Bowden says he hopes to make a significant impact with his development, which will be located at the Alabama-Georgia line on the Chattahoochee River.

Bowden's plans come after Phenix City officials recently offered tax incentives to the developer of a $220 million project that will include condominiums, hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues across the river from the civic center in neighboring Columbus, Ga.

The Ledger-Enquirer reports that city leaders plan to offer similar perks to Bowden. He already is designing a high-end apartment complex, but other parts will take years.

Developers hope to capitalize from the construction of a whitewater rafting course that will draw people to the area.
