Governor Robert Bentley has declared this week as Severe Weather Awareness Week.
As we know with recent events with the winter storms and tornadoes, Alabama is no stranger to severe weather.

This weekend you will be able to get the items you need for those severe weather events-- tax free.

February 17, 2008... An EF-3 tornado swept through Prattville hitting the Walmart and the CVS where Lisa Morgan worked.

"CVS over there was tore up. We had to move all the stuff from one CVS to another because of all the drugs in it. It tore up here, Sheila Boulevard all the houses were tore down. It was awful," said Morgan.

The memories serve as a reminder to residents to be prepared not just for tornadoes, but whatever the situation.
This weekend residents throughout Alabama will be able to get severe weather preparedness items tax free.

Things like flashlights, batteries, duct tape, portable generators and NOAA weather radios.

"Cell phone chargers and things are also in the tax exempt list. Those are great items to have in your vehicle as we've learned in the past few weeks with the people trapped in their vehicles in Birmingham," said Autauga County EMA Director Ernie Baggett.

Baggett also reminds you to not forget about your kids.

"To see your parents concerned and without power for a few days, those things are taxing on the children too. A lot of times we tend to forget that having something for them to do and keep them occupied, gives you the opportunity to take care of the things that need to be taken care of," said Baggett.

Lisa Morgan says she won't be shopping for those things this weekend because the past has taught her to be prepared for the future.

"Took advantage of that way before now. We are ready we keep water stocked and we got our weather radios and everything," said Morgan.
