By CBS 8 News

Exit polling from Alabama's Republican primary shows nearly three-fourths of the voters described themselves as evangelical or born-again Christians. Rick Santorum showed up as the favorite candidate among those voters who said shared religious beliefs is an important factor in choosing a president.

Mitt Romney held a slight edge among those evangelicals who said shared religious beliefs is not an important factor.

About four in 10 voters said the top quality they sought in a candidate was the ability to beat Barack Obama in November. Other factors driving the vote include strong moral character, being a true conservative or having the right experience.

The preliminary results from 1,023 Alabama voters were compiled at 30 polling places. They have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
