Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is appealing for votes in Alabama, calling it the "heart of conservatism" ahead of its primary next week.

Speaking to hundreds at a state-owned space museum in Huntsville on Thursday, Santorum drew big ovations with calls for increased federal spending on defense and space programs while spending less on social welfare programs.

Santorum says GOP front-runner Mitt Romney is too much like President Barack Obama. He says both oppose individual freedom in favor of government programs like the health care laws passed nationally, and in Massachusetts when Romney was governor.

Forty-seven delegates are at stake in Alabama's Republican presidential primary on Tuesday.
