Voters in Jackson's Gap Re-Elect Mayor Who Died Last Month

By CBS 8 News

After the votes were counted in Tuesday's city races, the mayor of the Tallapoosa County town of Jackson's Gap won another term -- even though she died last month.

That's leaving voters wondering who will serve.

Janis Canham died after surgery -- and still received about twice as many votes as her challenger.

Some residents say they voted for her because they thought she was the better candidate. Others voted yes to honor her memory.

It'll be up to city council to fill her seat.

The city council plans to declare the mayor's office vacant on November 5. Then it will have 60 days to name a new mayor, or else Gov. Robert Bentley will get to name someone.
