69th Habitat For Humanity Home Completed In Montgomery, Brings Hope To Local Family
In tough times, a family is given the gift of a new home. That's exactly what Habitat for Humanity does, and today, they celebrated the completion of the 69th home built in Montgomery. It was over a year ago when the First United Methodist Church envisioned a home on this plot of land. And now it's become a dream come true for one Montgomery family. It's a key opening the door to everything Carla Surls has ever wanted. Causing emotions this mother and her son, Brandon, can't put into words. "If it wasn't with Him and me praying about it, I wouldn't be here today getting my gift from Him," Said Carla Surls. Turning an empty lot into a place she can "now" call home. "I'm just ready to move this evening because that's pretty much... I'm happy about it... I'm so happy!" Said Carla's son, Brandon. A dream made possible thanks to the First United Methodist Church of Montgomery and Habitat for Humanity. Since January, the Surls family and volunteers spent hundreds of man hours trying to get this house ready for move-in day. But it hasn't been easy. Carla is a single mother working two jobs. Yet, it never stopped her from lending a hand or a hammer on her own home. "It's just like an early Christmas present to me because I helped build it with my two hands. I never thought that I could do it, but I guess you never know until you give it a try!" Habitat volunteers say they're building more than just the Surls' home. They're creating a foundation for the family's new life. "It's just a great feeling to be able to help someone, like Carla who has worked so hard and prayed for so long to get a home where she felt safe and where she felt safe raising her son," Said Claire Smith, a Habitat for Humanity board member. Church officials say the home has been purchased through non-profit, no-interest mortgages. The Surls' monthly payments will go to helping build another Montgomery family's Habitat home. Carla and Brandon plan to start moving into their new home Sunday evening.
