AL Senate Approves New Legislative Districts

The Alabama Senate has approved new Senate districts that Republicans and Democrats predict will strengthen the GOP's control in the next legislative elections in 2014.

The 21-12 vote Tuesday night split along party lines, with the Senate's Republican majority voting yes and Democratic minority voting no. The vote came after the Senate spent most of two days listening to the 333-page redistricting plan being read aloud.

Democratic Sen. Marc Keahey says the plan makes it harder for several Democratic incumbents by reducing the number of African-American citizens in their districts. Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh says the plan could boost the number of Republicans in the 35-member Senate from 22 to 27.

The plan still must be approved by the House. That could happen Thursday.
