Sunday afternoon ASU kicked off the formal opening of its newest library, the Levi Watkins Learning Center.

The ceremony included interactive cultural exhibits and speakers, like Donald Watkins Senior, the son of former ASU President, Dr. Levi Watkins, who the library is named after. Watkins was the ASU President from 1962 to 1981.

"This is a great day for Alabama State University," said Joseph Silver. "It's part of the entire transformation that's going on on campus and the learning center, so far as I'm concerned is the symbolic heartbeat of this university."

The renovations included a courtyard and an enlarged area to house the growing collection of writings and historical artifacts around the Civil Rights Movement along with more space for students.
