Adoptive Families Rally at State House, Alvin Holmes Responds

By Ashley Thompson

State Representative Alvin Holmes comes under fire for comments about interracial adoption.

Holmes recently said white people don't adopt black children and now some Alabama families are trying to prove him wrong.

Alvin Holmes is sticking by some controversial comments he made during the legislative session.

"The majority of white people in the state of Alabama are against adopting black children and the majority of white people in the state of Alabama are against their daughters having babies by black men and I stand by that comment," he says.

Those comments have many families outraged. Adoptive families and friends gathered at the State House Wednesday to protest what Holmes said.

"I just can't believe somebody in 2014 could say the things that Representative Holmes has said," says Thomas Casson. "It's just sad."

Casson has six adopted children, with four of them being bi-racial or black. He says he and many others would like an apology.

"Hopefully we can get an apology from Representative Holmes, just saying that has was wrong."

But Holmes says not a chance.

"The majority of white people in my opinion in the state of Alabama do not want their daughters having black babies," he says. "They know it's true. I know it's true. And they're not going to say, yes Alvin Holmes is right."

Not many are saying Holmes is right, at least not publicly. Sam McClure founded the Adoption Law Firm in Montgomery and says he believes Holmes is out of touch.

"At any given time, there's maybe around 300 children who are waiting to be adopted. We all the time interact with issues, race is not an issue about a child needing a home. It's a child needs a home and we're willing to take them in."

But Holmes says that's not the norm.

"I know it's embarrassing to them," he says. "When they go out and say, well it doesn't matter to me and then most of them catch they daughter having a black baby, they'd have a conniption fit."

Holmes says he stands by his comments because he says when he introduced a bill that would repeal a section in the Alabama constitution that banned interracial marriage, he says the majority of white people in the state voted against it.

The rally was organized by members of a facebook group called Faces of Families in Alabama. The group was formed in light of Holmes comments, to share pictures of interracial adoptive families.

Ok, let's play the game. Barack Obama. White mother, black father. Not aborted -- which is far more than Mr. Obama (or Mrs. Obama, for that matter) would allow an inconvenient grandchild.

Another racist southern Democrat...yawn. Someday they'll die out, right?

I would be more concerned about people who focus their thinking on simply 'wanting black babies'

Get with the program channel 8. Don't you like to report on bad guys? God only knows what this guy has probably done in his "fine" career...

What's largely ignored is the volume of anti-white racism amongst black Democrats. Look at all the knockout-game attacks. Though most black Democrats wouldn't go that far, most black Democrats have a bias against whites. I know this for a fact. I'm a black conservative, and the racists are comfortable making racist remarks in front of me because I too am black.

Hi, I have 3 children in a biracial marriage and I cannot understand the bigotry of this politician. This man is bigoted and out of touch from the "real" people. He is stuck in 1940s America. Don't forget that Progressive / Liberal Democrats were the racists. Now they peddle race hatred, bigotry and division to pit people against each other. I believe people should be judged by the content of their character not their skin color as MLK said!

Im discusted by him!! He never has anything nice to say about the white race. Please tell me why that is ok? If it were a white person in office talking about the black race that person would be suspended without pay until the issue was investigated and resolved. More than likely he would have already resigned had he of been white. Why is this ok?! He needs to be worried more about the issues at hand instead of creating more issues. Ive adopted a little girl myself. She was 30 mins from her procedure of being aborted when the desicion was made to allow me to adoot her. Why is it so easy for a baby to be killed? Its used as a birth control. $100 to kill a baby, thousands to adopt one. No questions asked to kill a baby, an entire process to adoot one! There is your problem.

I bet he can't provide even one Black family that adopted a white baby! He is an embarrassment and makes good Black people look bad! His IQ can not be higher than about 60. He is only in office because he is Black and comes from an area that is all uninformed Blacks as well.

The problem is not the people of Alabama. Holmes is the racist.

Probably more of those photos (whites adopting children of color)….than photos of black families who adopt white children. Personally I do not care….but if adopting a child with a different skin color is a sign of racial tolerance….then let’s apply it to all races (not just whites). myunginc

In his case what's good for the goose is not good for the gander. It's all okay for ignorant black people like him to spew racism but god forbid the opposite be true. Once we start seeing only human beings and not black, white, yellow, red or brown all the hatred will vanish....maybe...:(

Time after time, liberal democrats - many of whom are black - demonstrate who the real racists are. Alvin Holmes should resign - and use his super-mind-reading-powers somewhere useful, like Vegas, instead of wasting our money in office.

It is hard for me to tell from the video, but it looks like Rep. Holmes is bi-racial.

Clay said on Thursday, Apr 10 at 12:36 PM

Isn't this a twist..... For years we had our state government full of white racist. Now that most or all of the vocal white racist have been voted out over the years we still have this black racest still in office running his mouth about everything he can so that he can continue to keep his state pay check flowing. He is the same ignorant trash that the whites ran off from office years ago. He is an old racest that needs to be removed from office unless the State of Alabama wants to keep this black eye in the state house through there own stupidy. Alvin Holmes is nothing but a race baiter and piece of trash. What a total imbarassment he is to EVERY citizen of the state of Alabama.

Why isnt the media taking Holmes to task and demanding he show proof of the voting record? Is it because he's black? If it were a white representative you'd crucify him. Call it what it is Channel 8, a racist out of touch bigot. Love is color blind and knows no boundaries...none !!

Sherry said on Thursday, Apr 10 at 10:47 AM

How does Holmes know that the voters who voted against it are all white?

Pam said on Thursday, Apr 10 at 10:12 AM

I'd like to know if Mr. Holmes himself has adopted a black or bi-racial baby? When did it become the responsibility of whites only to adopt these children?

S Paul said on Thursday, Apr 10 at 6:00 AM

Every time Alvin Holmes opens his mouth...SOMETHING STUPID FLIES OUT! His one and only topic is “RACISM”. He is a black raciest and is only a symptom of the underlying problem. The cause of this problem is the people who think like Mr. Holmes and keep reelecting him time after time after time.
