Alabama EMA Prepared for Sandy Aftermath

By CBS-8 Reporter

As Sandy packs a powerful punch to the northeast, Alabama EMA Director Art Faulkner says it's a storm like nothing he has ever experienced.

"What makes this storm unique than what we have dealt with here on the gulf coast is that you've got another system that has been brought in by the gulf stream that is impacting this farther to the west. So you are going to have a large amount of snowfall to the inland states that are going to have to be dealt with," said Faulkner.

But Faulkner has full confidence in the first responders there after going through 9/11 and Hurricane Irene last year.

And he has some advice to the residents in the hurricane's path.

"People that have been through this before, like the citizens of Alabama many times, know that there are two things that you need to to do. 1) You need to hide from the wind. 2) You need to run from the water. You need to get away from areas prone to flood."

Faulkner says his department will be watching the storm and standing by ready to respond if needed.

Governor Bentley released this statement Monday about helping those impacted by the storm:

"Our prayers are with those facing the effects of Hurricane Sandy. We here in Alabama will help states on the East Coast in any way we can."
