A national organization says Alabama Power's agreements to purchase wind-generated power put it among the leading utilities in the Southeast to pursue the renewable source.

Alabama Power has approval from the state Public Service Commission to purchase up to 404 megawatts of electricity from two wind projects in Oklahoma and Kansas. That's slightly less than one-fourth of the output of the Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan.

A spokeswoman for the American Wind Energy Association in Washington says Alabama Power and Southwestern Electric Power Co. in Louisiana have been leaders among investor-owned utilities in the Southeast in pursuing agreements for wind-generated electricity. Southwestern Electric Power has agreements for 469 megawatts.
