Alabama Senate Passes Texting While Driving Ban

The Alabama Senate has voted to ban texting while driving, except in limited cases.

 

The Senate voted 24-7 Tuesday for a revised version of a bill that passed the House earlier. The House had approved the bill without any exceptions. The Senate's version of the bill allows texting to reach emergency services, to receive GPS information, or while stopped in traffic with the car in neutral or park.

The exceptions were offered by Republican Sen. Bill Holtzclaw of Madison, who said he likes to use his cell phone while stopped at a long traffic light. The bill can't become law unless the Senate and House agree on the same version.

 

The Governors Highway Safety Association says 37 states ban texting while driving, including two of Alabama's neighbors: Georgia and Tennessee.
