Alabama State Troopers Warn Drivers About Highway Dangers

The Memorial Day holiday weekend is almost here and highway traffic will be up this weekend as folks travel to their destination. There is one danger state troopers want to warn you about, police impersonators.

The siren and flashing blue lights, typically signals one thing to drivers.

"I would pull over," said one Montgomery driver.

One Montgomery woman's choice not to pull over could have saved her life.

"I had no idea who they were. They had a light within their dashboard," said Ro'reasha Love.

Love says something about the flashing light in the car she saw behind her just didn't seem right, so she called police.

"They let me know that I was not being followed, so I kept going and they told me they would send someone out. I drove straight to the police station and the person that was following me, they stopped," said Love.

Alabama State Trooper Charles Dysart says something like that can happen, but it's not common.

"We do want motorists to be aware of the possibilities, but it is highly unlikely," said Trooper Dysart.

If you do find yourself in a potentially unsafe situation, he says there are things you can do to protect yourself.

First, acknowledge the law enforcement officer by putting your hazards on and slowing down. Wait to pull over in a safe location. You can also call 911 to verify that there is actually an officer behind you.

But this weekend, don't be alarmed because there is sure to be plenty of blue lights on the roadways.

"We just want the public to be aware of that, you are going to see more law enforcement agencies and more law enforcement cars now than you have in the past," said Trooper Dysart.

The Click it or Ticket program and Memorial Day Weekend blitz has more law enforcement officials out on the roads throughout the weekend trying to keep all travelers safe.
