There are talks of a new playoff system headed for division one college football. CBS 8 talks with Auburn Head Football Coach Gene Chizik about whether this idea scores points with him.

Plans are in the works that would change division one college football as we know it.

"All the big conference commissioners got together and Notre Dame's athletic director last week. They kind of hammered out a plan of what they'd like to see, which is a four team playoff at the end of the year," said CBS 8 Sports Analyst, John Longshore.

That means the top four teams would have to play each other to earn their spot at the national championship game.

A man no stranger to winning a title, Auburn Tigers Head Coach Gene Chizik, says it all depends on your perspective.

"I think you can look at different years and feel different ways. There's been a lot of years that I think the formula that's been in place has worked," said Chizik.

For his team, the formula did work during the 2010 season when the Tigers brought home the crystal trophy.

"Then there's been some years where people would question whether that's the best way to do it or not," he said.

Longshore says a perfect example of an imperfect system was the way things played out last year, which rubbed some people the wrong way.

"I think Alabama and LSU playing in the national championship last year, was almost like the last straw. Here was a team that not only did not win their conference, they did not win their division and they got a chance to play for the national championship and we all saw what happened," said Longshore.

Right or wrong, the debate continues and change is on the table.

Coach Chizik says this may not be a bad move because they are always looking for a way to improve the system.

"Even though there's a lot of details left to be ironed out, I'm sure that it's really going to be a good process," said Chizik.

If a playoff system was put in place, the change would not go into effect until the 2014 season.
