Campus Housing Rates To Rise at Auburn University

Auburn students living on campus can expect to dig deeper in their pockets for expenses in the fall. The decision to increase housing rates comes after Friday morning's Board of Trustees meeting at Auburn Montgomery.

Starting in fall 2012, dorm rooms will cost about $300-400 more a year, that's about a 10-percent increase each semester.

AUM students will also see housing rates increase, but only by three percent on select dorms.

“This is very shocking to me,” said Amelia Purifoi, a senior Human Development and Family Studies student.

“I already have to pay for books and stuff, so I'm not very thrilled about the situation but I'm going to be here, so I guess I have no choice,” she said.

Purifoi wasn’t the only student caught off guard with the price jump.

“I wasn't told at all and frankly I'm surprised just because I've heard stories about how the quality of the newer dorms wasn't great,” said Nathan Lane, a sophomore Economics and Anthropology major.

Typically Auburn only requests rate changes a year at a time, but Friday the board approved three years or six total semesters of increased costs.

“Instead of being at the lowest end of the Southeastern conference for pricing, we wanted to start moving our housing pricing closer to the middle,” said Don Large, Executive Vice President at Auburn.

Large says Auburn made this decision based upon other factors, too. He said the university is expecting more costs for its newest housing facility opening in fall 2013, and also the renovation of the Hill Dorms.

“I mean everybody would not like to have an increase, but I think they will be very understanding and accepting of that,” Large said.

But according to students, it's quite the opposite.

“I wish it wasn't increasing, I wish it could stay the same or at least go down a bit,” Purifoi said.

She said she’s disappointed the university didn’t consider the majority of students.

“The average college student doesn’t come from a well off family, and doesn’t get a whole bunch of scholarships,” Purifoi said.

On campus housing won’t be the only costs on the rise, Auburn also plans to increase tuition next fall, but the school has yet to decide how much it will cost students. The board tabled the tuition issue and plans to revisit it in April.
