Commissioner of Alabama's Prison System Responds to Tutwiler Allegations
The Commissioner of Alabama's prison system is responding to the allegations of sexual abuse at Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka. Commissioner Kim Thomas spoke with CBS 8 today, and says that the Department of Corrections is investigating the alleged sexual abuse of inmates by guards at Tutwiler. Thomas says he does not tolerate the alleged actions. "My people know that this is something that I won't tolerate. It's one of the things that egregious to me. It's a violation of our oath that we are to uphold the constitution and follow the state law. We want to investigate these things and let the wrongdoers go to jail if that's the decision of the judge and the prosecutor in each of these cases", says Thomas. The Equal Justice Initiative contends that guards use intimidation and threats of punishment to discourage women from reporting the sexual abuse.
The watchdog group - the Equal Justice Initiative says it filed a complaint with the Justice Department on Tuesday claiming that guards at the Prison have raped inmates, exchanged smuggled contraband for sexual favors, and even gotten some inmates pregnant. |

This is nothing new. I was at Tutwiler in 1997-1998. There was an inmate named Lisa who was pregnant. She had been in prison for several years, so it was obvious that she was impregnated while incarcerated. Other inmates had Fashion Fair makeup and other items that were obviously smuggled in by guards. An inmate named Michelle would be fetched at about 2am by a guard. She was taken out to a guard shack where she had sex with one of the guards. Regarding rape...there are inmates everywhere. If an inmate was raped, they were taken away from the inmate population. If a guard asks an inmate to go to some location away from other inmates, the inmate should know there may be a problem. The showers and toilets have no privacy. Everybody sees everybody. The male guards walk into the showers and see naked women. Inappropriate acts are bound to happen. Again, none of this stuff is anything new.
