Committee Rushing to Get Alabama Education Budget

A conference committee of six legislators is using the Legislature's last meeting day to try to work out differences between the House and Senate over Alabama's $5.5 billion education budget.

 

The conference committee was formed Wednesday morning. One of the committee members, Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery, said he's optimistic the panel will reach a compromise that will be approved by the House and Senate before the session has to end at midnight.

 

The version of the budget approved by the House gives more to universities than the Senate's version does. The Senate's version uses $20 million in state tax revenue to buy school buses. The House version would sell state bonds to buy buses.

 

Both versions are about 2.5 percent smaller than this year's education budget.
