Community College Summer Enrollment Down

The state's community college system is a seeing dramatic dip in enrollment for summer classes.

Community colleges statewide are seeing more than 20 thousand fewer students headed to the classroom this summer. Wallace State Community College in Selma is down about 700 summer students. Both Southern Union State Community College and Trenholm State Technical College both have about 200 less students this summer compared to last year. "It's mostly because of federal pell grant allocations going from 3 down to 2 people can't afford to go to school, and also the economy is turning and people aren't seeing a need to go back to school" said Dean Argo with the Alabama Department of Post Secondary Education.

Jefferson State Community College near Birmingham was the only state community college that had an increase in summer enrollment.
