Director of Alabama Dept. of Archives and History Retiring

The longtime director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History , Ed Bridges, plans to retire at the end of the year.

 

Bridges is completing the fifth six-year term as director of the department, which maintains a collection of Alabama historical items.

 

The board of trustees of the department on Monday named board member Shirley McCrary of Mooresville to lead the search for a new director.

 

Bridges said in his 30-years as director, he has become convinced of the importance of the archives' collection. He said Alabama's archives is "one of the finest" state history departments in the nation.

 

Members of the board of trustees said they hope to have a new director in place by Oct. 1.Bridges is a former high school and college history teacher.
