Alabama Marine Police are investigating a double drowning in Tallapoosa County.

Officers say Clyde Jerome Harper and Timothy Shane Welch, both of Alexander City, drowned in the Fox Creek area of the Tallapoosa river around one thirty this afternoon.

According to eyewitnesses, the two were swimming with a group of people when they had trouble with the current.

Others in the group couldn't get to Harper and Welch in time.
