Drive-By Shooting Injures 5 in Tuskegee; Witnesses Relive Incident

Tuskegee Police are investigating a drive-by shooting that left five people hurt. One of them is a Booker T. Washington High School freshman. Tonight, the neighborhood is coming together to try to put an end to violence.

Capricorn Apartment residents say around 6 p.m. on Sunday, a silver car drove into the complex. They say within seconds, a driver who was armed with an assault rifle started shooting.

Dewanna Huffman was cooking Sunday dinner. Her son Demarcus was sitting on their porch in the Capricorn Apartment complex.

"A guy stopped out here with an AK-47, and he just let probably 20 to 30 rounds go. [Demarcus] didn't know he was hit until he came in the house. When he came inside the house, his face was bleeding really bad," she says.

Demarcus is a freshman at Booker T. Washington High School in Tuskegee. He's 14 years old.

"I was glad that the bullet just grazed him and didn't go in, because it probably would have been a fatality," she says.

Police say five people were injured and taken to the hospital.

Tenesha Levett lives on the second floor. She was home Sunday evening.

"All I did was hit the floor, because I have carpet burns on my arm," Levett says.

Cynthia Bridges was watching her grandchildren play in the street.

"He came back down the street with the gun hanging out, and he was shooting. Me? The first thing I did was grab the children. I grabbed all the children and took them into my house," Bridges says.

Bridges says more than 30 children live in Capricorn Apartments.

"We don't need this. We are all brothers and sisters. We need to learn to get along," she says.

And for Huffman, her son has been released from the hospital, but she says it will take a while to recover.

"I'm sad that the youth can't sit outside and play with one another. Just be teenagers and talk and have fun without someone coming by and shooting at them," she says.

Police say they have a person of interest, but no arrests have been made.

All five victims were treated for non-life threatening injuries and have been released.
