Eastdale Mall, Other Retailers Opening Thanksgiving Day for Black Friday Shoppers

This week, retailers are announcing their black friday store hours. And for many of them, doors open on Thanksgiving Day.
As stores continue to open earlier and earlier each year, some say it's killing the meaning of Thanksgiving.

For the first time ever, all stores in Eastdale Mall will open at 8PM on Thanksgiving. And marketing director Suzanna Wasserman tells us it's because other stores are also opening at that time...

"This year we've all just decided to open," she says. "It's a big thing going around in town and all over so I think it's going to be a big day for us."

It should be a big day for other retailers as well. Target will open its doors at 8PM on Thanksgiving while Best Buy, even earlier at 6PM. Some shoppers say they're looking forward to it.

"I will stay with family in the morning but by 5 o'clock, I've got to be here," says Masson Aziadapoiu.

Others say they're not buying into the shopping rush.

"I think it kind of takes away from the holiday," says Tameka Shuford. "I mean, it's a time to give thanks and to be with your family and friends so I think it's just kind of taking away from the whole meaning of Thanksgiving."

Wasserman admits Eastdale Mall is getting some backlash for opening on Thanksgiving.

"A lot of stores are unhappy but you know, it's something that's really not our decision," she explains. "It's nationwide, most people are doing it. So we're excited. I think it'll be something different, a new tradition."

A new tradition that some employees want no part of. Brian Bailey works at Sound FX in Eastdale Mall. He tells us he doesn't mind working on Thanksgiving but says his co-workers do.

"It depends on how you look at Thanksgiving," he says. "It is a family holiday. The mall needs to be closed but it is what it is."

Eastdale Mall will be giving away ten dollar gift cards to the first 100 people who arrive at 8PM.

Shopping on Thanksgiving is needless. If you can't wait a day to shop...then there's probably someething wrong with the shopper. The holidays have lost all symbolic meaning since they've now started at the first of September with their advertising.
