Family Wants Apology for 1975 Montgomery Police Shooting

Relatives of a man who was killed by a Montgomery police officer want the city to apologize almost 40 years after his death.

 

Florence Whitehurst says she would feel better about her late husband's death if the city would just say it's sorry for what happened.

 

A Montgomery police officer fatally shot Bernard Whitehurst on Dec. 2, 1975. An investigation showed Whitehurst was mistaken for a robbery suspect, and that police tried to cover up the truth by placing a gun beside his body.

 

The scandal led to the resignation of officials including Montgomery's mayor at the time.

 

Whitehurst's son, Stacy Whitehurst, tells CBS 8 News the pain is still fresh to relatives. They plan to seek an apology and compensation from the Montgomery City Council during a meeting next Tuesday.
