Former Gov. Don Siegelman Resentenced to PrisonFormer Gov. Don Siegelman has been resentenced to prison after his 2006 conviction on bribery and other charges. In federal court in Montgomery, Siegelman received a sentence of 78 months in federal prison. That's 10 months less than what he first received after his conviction. He's getting credit for the 9 months he already served. That means Siegelman will serve 69 months, or 5 years and 9 months. He's been told to report by September 11. Siegelman had to be resentenced because two counts against him were dropped when he appealed the case. He was convicted of offering HealthSouth founder Richard Scrushy a seat on a state hospital regulatory board in exchange for a $500,000 donation to Siegelman's failed 1999 campaign to start a statewide lottery. Scrushy was also convicted and recently finished his prison term. Siegelman was also ordered to pay a $50,000 fine, a $500 assessment fee and perform 500 hours of community service. After he's released from prison, he will be on supervised release for three years. Siegelman can appeal the sentence. "I never expected my career in public service would end in a federal courtroom," Siegelman told reporters outside the federal courthouse. Siegelman says he respects the judge's decision but still feels the courts need to clear a murky area of the law as to when a campaign contribution becomes a bribe. "If I had known I was coming anywhere close to anything that could be considered crossing the line between what traditionally has been political fundraising and an area of crime, I would not have come anywhere close to that," Siegelman said. |
