Gay Marriage: Local Religious and Political Leaders React to Pres. Obama
Millions of Americans are talking about President Obama's decision to support same-sex marriage, including a number of political and religious leaders in the River Region.
“[God] made a man and a woman; it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," said
Todd believes gay marriage will not be settled at the state level. She feels it will be treated the same way as a number of other social policies like civil rights and women's rights, ultimately decided upon by the Supreme Court.

The issue of gay marriage is one that is not simply political, but that goes to the heart of the human person. Man and women, created in the Imago Dei (image of God), are ordered, by the very structure of the created body, toward self-gift. Catholic theology speaks beautifully to this. In the wake of President Obama's comments and our now (rather superficial, politically-driven) national debate, this is a time for all of us to deepen our understanding of the nature of the human person and how to convey the beautiful truth of the body and sexuality. I recommend starting with John Paul II's Theology of the Body: "Man and Woman He Created Them" (transl, Waldstein). Let's embrace this challenge. Be not afraid.
