Governor Bentley Visits Parts of Elmore County Hit by Tornadoes

April 27th is a memorable day for many Alabamians.  It was a devastating day that has many people taking extra precaution when it comes to severe weather events.

In the heart of the Middle Road Community near Eclectic in Elmore County, residents at Myers Country Acres trailer park are rebuilding.

Governor Robert Bentley's tour across the state takes him to that area on Tuesday to view the recovery efforts.

The owner of Myers Country Acres, Billy Myers, showed the Governor their latest additions of those recovery efforts -- a storm shelter for residents that he is building himself.  The incomplete structure is a train boxcar that is mounted in the ground and will be stabilized by concrete.

Myers says that he's building the shelter from money out of his own pocket and not using money from the Governor's Trust Fund or from FEMA.

Governor Bentley says that there is around $2.6 million dollars left out of the $5 million in the Governors Trust Fund that is used for storm shelters across the state.  FEMA estimates that $140 million are needed for the unmet recovery needs  in Alabama.

The governor and Emergency Management organizations are taking advantage of the anniversary for political gain. Community shelters were proposed, briefed, and made available at cost to communities, churches, and fire departments. The Elmore and Autauga County Emergency Management offices along with Mr. Joe Davis, ADEM were briefed last April. All said providing protection for the public was not their responsibility. Attorney Gerald Beasley's office was approached to file a class action law suit( for the families of those who lost their lives) against State and Federal agencies responsible. His law firm declined to represent the families.
