A Mobile grandmother is accused of strangling her 4-year-old granddaughter causing the girl to lose consciousness.

Police said they will charge 53 year old Shirley Bowman with one count of attempted murder.

Mobile Police arrived at a home Friday morning after a woman knocked on a door telling residents someone was chasing her.

Police say they found the child face down on the road. Officers believe Bowman may suffer from mental illness.

The child was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Her grandmother is being held at the Mobile County Metro Jail.
