A state Senate committee has approved a bill making several changes to Alabama's immigration law and put the bill in line for debate in the Senate on Tuesday.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 7-3 Wednesday, but it made some changes to the version of the bill that won approval in the House last week.

The committee took out a provision that allowed police making a traffic stop to check the legal status of passengers if police have reasonable suspicion the passengers are in the country illegal. The committee also added a prohibition against school officials asking children about their parents' place of birth or immigration status.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said he expects more changes in the Senate on Tuesday.
