Jackson Hospital's Cutting Edge Robotic Surgery Center

By Ellis Eskew

When it comes to surgery, Montgomery is on the cutting edge.

Jackson Hospital gave us a tour of their new state-of-the-art facility.

It may look like a video game...
But it's not for play.
It's part of new cutting edge technology at Jackson Hospital.

"I think this is probably one of the most significant changes in the last 20 years," said Surgeon Dr. Wesley Barry.

The STERIS Corporation partnered with Jackson Hospital to bring robotic and laparoscopic surgery together. The surgeons sit behind the controls as the robot does the surgery.
The hospital also has minimally invasive surgery....Meaning small incisions and less recovery time.

"Patients do well with smaller incisions, and in a place like Alabama where obesity is such a problem, it's much technically easier to operate on patients laparoscopically than openly. It allows them to recover with less complications," said surgeon Dr. Brian Gary.

And there is a wide variety of surgeries the center offers.

"With this room we have the 3 millimeter technology that will be applicable doing so many procedures... The gall bladder, perforations of the stomach and intestine, removing the colon, removing the spleen," said Dr. Barry.

It's all a part of bringing the latest in technology to the capital city...where, as they say, bigger is not always better.

"People have always thought big and big was really the idea that got you somewhere. That doesn't necessarily hold true for surgery, though. So nowadays we think small, we dream small. And that's how we want to approach surgery if we can," said Dr. Brian Richardson.

The surgeon performs the surgery using the daVinci 'robot" as a tool. The sureon is in control, not the robot.
