Job Fair Aims to Fill Hundreds of New Positions at ASU Hornet Stadium

We're less than a month away from the annual Turkey Day Classic at Alabama State University, and this year, all the action will be at a brand new stadium. But that also means more employees, so now the university is turning to local people to fill the need.

There are more than 300 jobs available for the Turkey Day Classic alone, and at Saturday's job fair, more people showed up than needed. That included unemployed people around the River Region, like Genesis Whitfield, a college stuent who's been searching for a part-time job for months.

"Montgomery is a small town, but it's not so small here, really the people outnumber the job opportunities," said Whitman.

Tra'von Boeman, who recently graduated high school, was also at Saturday's job fair, hoping to find work. "It's really been tough, and really hard for kids to find a job during the holiday season, so pretty much, it's really been tough," he said.
 
Applicants say hundreds of new jobs in their area is a very big deal. "This is giving people opportunity to be able to take care of themselves. People just don't want handouts, they want to be able to take care of themselves," said Cynthia Wilson, who was hoping to secure her second part-time job.
 
ASU says it wants to do its part for Montgomery, by giving work to hundreds of local people. Crews spent Saturday installing the 64-foot high scoreboard, and workers will continue to work on the new stadium over the coming weeks.
 
"Hopefully, that's the plan is to lift some spirits up and let them know there are some jobs,that are available out here, and just go out an apply for them," said Ogennia Rudolph, who works with ASU.
 
The university says half of the people working Turkey Day Classic will get permanent positions at the new stadium.
 
ASU will hold two more job fairs at Hutchison Church on Monday, and Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church next Sunday.
