Lawmakers to Decide on Budget in Conference
Both the House and Senate have agreed to let a conference committee work out differences between the two chambers' versions of a General Fund budget for non-education state services. House Ways and Means-General Fund chairman Jim Barton said main difference is how to deal with a $184 million funding hole. In the House version the shortage is in Medicaid and it's in prisons in the Senate version. Legislators may let voters decide in November how to fill the funding gap. The House voted 89-0 Wednesday and the Senate 29-1 to send the budget to a conference committee. Committee members are Republican Rep. Jay Love of Montgomery, Democratic Rep. Laura Hall of Huntsville, Barton, Republican Sens. Del Marsh of Anniston, Arthur Orr of Decatur and Democratic Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville. (Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
