Legislature Ends Regular Session by Approving General Fund Budget
Alabama lawmakers worked late into the night on the 2012 session's final day and shortly before the midnight deadline passed a $1.67 billion budget to fund most non-education state services.
Lawmakers passed a budget that will require Alabama voters to go to the polls in August to provide part of the money.
Voters will go to the polls Aug. 28 to authorize the transfer of $145.8 million from an oil and gas trust fund to the General Fund. The same amount would also be transferred in 2013 and 2014.
The budget now goes to Gov. Robert Bentley for his review.
General Fund budget chairman Jim Barton said if voters do not approve the funds transfer lawmakers will have to go into special session to figure out a funding source.,
