Legislature Says Ending Ectopic Pregnancy Isn't AbortionThe Legislature has passed a bill saying that terminating an ectopic pregnancy doesn't count as an abortion under Alabama law and doctors don't have to report the terminations to the state health department like they do abortions.
The bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Jack Williams of Vestavia Hills cleared the Senate 31-0 Thursday after passing the House 90-1 last week. The bill now goes to Gov. Robert Bentley to determine if he will sign it into law.
Democratic Sen. Linda Coleman of Birmingham said ending an ectopic, or tubal, pregnancy has been reported as an abortion, and no woman wants that on her medical record.
